So, I recently experienced a Japanese movie theater for the first time. They’re quite expensive, I wouldn’t recommend going very often. But, the whole reason I went was because I saw this commercial for this movie:
There were man-eating lions. It looked AWESOME. Clearly, I must watch this. Also, in case you didn't notice, it's a Japanese movie... Well, trifling details like no subs have never kept me from watching a perfectly good movie, so I did my homework.
There was a good bit of it.
First- take note of the fact that it's a sequel. Watch the first movie online, with subs. CheckSecond- it's a manga. Read manga online. (Decided I didn't really like the manga, so no check)
Third- google like crazy and read as many reviews online as can be found. Check
Fourth- youtube! Find the trailer w/ subs and watch it. Also cast interviews and so forth. Check
Fifth- research playing times at your local cinema. Find out that there is no such thing as late night showings
in Japan- the last showing starts around 6. On the other hand, first showing is at 10 am.
Finally- watch and be amazed!
On the whole, I rather liked it. It's not the sort of movie that will go on to win tons of rewards, but that's cool. There's good music, heist style plot (seriously, totally reminded me of the Ocean's movies), things that go boom... pretty exciting. I think I liked it a bit better than the first one, if only because the main character doesn't spend as much time crying. In the first movie, it felt like he was always in tears about something. Dude! Suck it up, do your thing and stick it to the man! But he was much cooler in this one.
My advice: give it about 6 months, until someone can sub it, then find it online and watch it.
Other movie news: Bunraku is coming to town! Sadly, even though it's being released in Japan, none of the theaters hereabouts will have it. Sad day :( Also, since my computer is being evil and keeps freezing on me (like 20x since I started this post) I will finish now and go do some sewing or something. Maybe even study Japanese. who knows? stranger things have been known to happen.
